When you take a flight, they do a safety Brief. And in the safety brief you get told that if, in an emergency, the oxygen masks drop down that you should put your own mask on first before helping others with theirs.
This applies in everyday life too.
It’s all good and well helping out everyone but yourself with their troubles and woes but soon enough, you’ll run out of oxygen. Nobody wants that.
Maybe in the immediate moment, someone might be mad that you took the time put your own oxygen mask on first, If that’s the case there’s a lesson to be learned for that person, and in time they’ll understand. In both the short & long run, more and more people will be glad, because how can you help others to breathe when you’ve got no oxygen yourself? The more oxygen you have, the more you can help others, if that’s what you want to do.
I’m very much a “other people matter more” type of person and sometimes that can be really damaging and draining. I’ve not had many detrimental effects and having learned a hardish way I’m now mostly pretty good at knowing my boundaries and how much is too much. I will absolutely put myself out if it helps you in any way and while I’ll always try to put my oxygen mask on first, sometimes I don’t, sometimes I need reminding that I’m important too.
Everyone needs reminding sometimes. So before you jump in to save someone, this is just a quick reminder that you need your oxygen mask on before you help someone else with theirs.
Take care of yourself, and be kind to you, you deserve it.
Keep breathing,
Beth x
And I know sometimes I put others first to ignore what I should actually be doing for myself. This is a great reminder. Fab post, my dear!! You are the bomb, bethikinzzzzz! ❤

Thank you so much for writing this post!!! I usually tend to help others people before helping myself if you know what I mean and then I feel like empty and that’s not the greatest feeling… I needed to read that so thank you. xx

I think this post is so important, and it resonates with me especially since I’ve been doing the same when it comes to friends and family. It wasn’t until last year I finally took the time to think about it and decided to look after myself first. Love this post B x
